SCOUT & CATALOGUE / ISS:08:11.09

The before and after of my grey linen. To dye it I do a two step process - first I bleach the grey to lighten it and then I dye with black textile paint. The end result is a soft tonal tie dye.

27 meters of black linen.

My dying station - 4 buckets from the 25 peso store, some rubber gloves, bleach and rubber bands.

Grey linen ready to be dunked in black textile paint.

Black linen being bleached.

Grey linen drying on my roof after black paint bath.

Black linen drying after bleach bath. I am not happy with the end result of my black linen. I over bleached the fabric allowing too many light areas and too little pure black and I didn't leave it in long enough so the bleached areas are much too orange. I'm going to try and remedy the situation today. I also had to go out and buy a bunch more fabric. Bummer.

The HUGE quantities of fabric are because I am busy preparing the Good Things Collection for the Unique LA show - normally I work in much smaller batches. After a long day dying yesterday I have all of my grey material ready. I will be spending some more time with the black today to help get it to a place I'm happy with.

If you're in the LA area on December 5th + 6th come check out my booth at Unique LA and see how it all turned out.
