Hands down our favourite city so far in Mexico has to be Guanajuato. Guanajuato city is the capital of the state of Guanajuato and is about 5 hours northwest of Mexico City. It was founded in the 1550's and quickly became prosperous from it's multitude of silver mines. Because the city was largely constructed during the Spanish rule of Mexico the city is FULL of stunning old European architecture, all of which is painted a different colour. The city runs up the sides of several mountains creating narrow winding streets and underground tunnels and the best part is it's a university town so it is teeming with young people. Every twist and turn is a new discovery and with plenty of cute cafe's, used book stores and giant markets I would have happily given up my casita in Puerto Vallarta and called Guanajuato my Mexican home.
