In Mexico, no matter where you go, there is always an accordion (and if you're really lucky, a tuba) ready to greet you. Apparently we have Germany to thank for the polka inspired traditional Mexican music found throughout the country. Known as 'Norteño', this distinct Mexican sound originated in the 19th century with the arrival of German and Czech immigrants in Northern Mexico. Soon the traditional sounds of Eastern Europe were integrated into the Ranchero Mexican music of the time.
While I may not be a fan per say, I appreciate Norteño for it's 'differentness'. Somehow the upbeat rhythms and the dramatic, robust lyrics reassure me that despite the fact I am carrying a Starbucks coffee I am still in a new country immersed in an entirely different culture. And for that I am grateful.
