Still working towards making the studio a functional place to create out of - here are some shots from the past week:

1_ A trip to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary.
2_A new stamp to test.
3_This isn't Mouse! Bruce Wayne is one of my studio mates cats - he keeps an eye on our progress in between his naps.

DYE TESTS

dyebook.01dyebook.02dyebook.03dyebook.04

One of the things I didn't think of when moving from Toronto to Vancouver is that the mineral content of the local water is very different. Minerals (among many other variables) drastically change what colours are produced when dyeing fabrics and so all new dye testing must begin...

With my new studio I will finally be able to dye again and I can't wait to get started on my first collection of 2013. Above are some images from my very first 'studio' in Mexico - my front patio with a view of the Pacific Ocean, a stairwell as a photo studio and a hammock as a drying line...

THIS OLD HOUSE

NP.HOUSE.01NP.HOUSE.02NP.HOUSE.03NP.HOUSE.04NP.HOUSE.05NP.HOUSE.06NP.HOUSE.08

The main reason I wanted to move home to Vancouver was to be closer to my family. Over the last couple of years both of my grandparents passed on and, while I have no regrets about spending four years away, it felt like a bit of a push to come back home and settle in for a good long stay. Yesterday I visited my grandparent's house for the last time which they bought in the 50's. It's the home that my mother and her sisters grew up in and it played a large role in my childhood as well. Seeing it now, empty and silent, was bittersweet to say the least. I'm glad I had the opportunity to capture the little details that remind me of them and got the chance to say one last good-bye.

ESSENTIALS : KATE MISS

KATEMISS.MANANA

Our latest Essentials post is courtesy of the lovely LA based blogger, photographer, jewelry and graphic designer Kate Miss whose blog, For Me For You, artfully follows her sun drenched California life. Obviously we were thrilled when this multi-talented lady agreed to open her S&C Mañana clutch and let us get a peek at what is inside:

What I carry with me really depends on the situation, but these are my most essential items that are almost always with me. This would probably be a bit of a going out situation here.
- Boring things like keys and my phone
- a pair of sunglasses I got for $8 off of eBay.
- I'm often carrying one of my "just in case" necklaces as I feel naked without one (this is a soon to come one from my line)
- I'm never without a pen - usually a Micron, and with that is usually one of my little Rifle Paper Co notebooks. This one is for jotting down wedding planning ideas as that's taking up more space in my brain lately than I care to admit.
- I always carry chapstick and one shade of lipstick. Most often lately it's So Chaud by MAC. The chapstick is Sugar by Fresh, which smells amazing.
- Lastly, my wallet, which is from Madewell that I've had for quite a while now.

AROUND HERE : TORONTO EDITION 2

In the last week I've been wandering the streets of Toronto (despite bone chilling wind) running errands, meeting with friends and experiencing the city in a way I never did while living here. How come it takes being a tourist to really search out the beauty in a place?

TO.2013.VISIT.07TO.2013.VISIT.08

My mornings were spent most days at The Common drinking amazing coffee and wishing they were expanding their business to Vancouver. Ditto with the insanely yummy bakery Bakerbots - I kept meaning to shoot their gorgeous goods but always got too excited and scarfed everything down pre-picture.

TO.2013.VISIT.10TO.2013.VISIT.12TO.2013.VISIT.13TO.2013.VISIT.14TO.2013.VISIT.15TO.2013.VISIT.16

I spent a morning at the AGO - I wanted to check out the Patti Smith photography exhibit and got sucked in to the rest of the gallery as a result. My favourite piece was 'The Forty Part Motet' by Janet Cardiff. She places 40 speakers in an oval and plays a recording of Salisbury Cathedral Choir singing a forty part English Renaissance motet - standing in it's center gave me goosebumps.

TO.2013.VISIT.09TO.2013.VISIT.11TO.2013.VISIT.17

Wandering home I passed the ROM (which, embarrassingly I have never been to) and while poking around in a vintage shop stumbled into the prettiest fitting room I've seen in a long time.

Thanks for having me Toronto! Hopefully I'll be back for another visit soon...
