When I was young I thought spiral staircases were so beautiful I didn't understand why they built them straight, but in the last 2 decades I haven't really given them much thought. Until moving to Mexico. Here it is the staircase of choice, I'm assuming because it's both cost effective and space efficient, and you see them everywhere - from the local coffee shop to the public library.

We have our own spiral staircase on our patio that's so narrow you have to lean back from the waist, almost as if you are beginning to limbo, in order to navigate it. These days, as I climb to our second patio with my knees hitting the steps above me, my elbows skinned on the narrow metal rail, I dream of sturdy wood staircases that ascend in a straight, direct line. My practical adult reasoning winning over my inner child once again.
