Last September we went on a road trip that just so happened to coincide with Mexico's Independence Day. Mexico is a country with a decently bloody past, filled with repression and warring cultures and as such they take their freedom very seriously. Not to mention that given any chance to party a Mexican will be the first to arrive and the last to leave. So, September 16th is a pretty big deal around here. For the big day we were in Ajijic, a small lake town just outside of Guadalajara. As we were strolling through the central square (zocalo) I noticed a bunch of kids running around with fluorescent eggs which they proceeded to smash into everything and everyone in their nearest vicinity. Apparently these eggs pop up every Independence day and I fell in love. An old woman was sitting on a bench with a huge basket filled with them and I rushed over to buy a few. I think I was the only person over the age of 12 with a collection of confetti eggs but I didn't care - I quickly pocketed them to display once we got home.
For the last 4 months they have been proudly displayed on my desk in a glass jar and today I decided it was time to ceremonially smash my confetti eggs. I'm not sure why today was the day...but it just felt right.
